Deadly blast in Egypt

6:55 am on 26 December 2013

Up to fourteen people have been killed by a powerful car bomb near the police headquarters in the Egyptian city of Mansoura.

Egyptian security sources say the massive explosion was felt 20kms away and wounded more than 100 people.

The provincial governor says most of the casualties are police personnel.

Regional head of security Sami El-Mihi was wounded in the blast and two of his aides were killed.

The bombing comes just weeks before Egypt holds a referendum on a new constitution intended to be the first step back to democratic rule.

The army ousted the Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in July.
