The United States is sending missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq.

A State Department official on Thursday confirmed a report in The New York Times that 75 Hellfire missiles were purchased by Iraq and delivered last week.

The drones are a smaller version of the Predator drones that once were frequently flown over Iraq.

"The United States is committed to supporting Iraq in its fight against terrorism," the official said.

Administration sources told the Times that the Iraqis had virtually run out of Hellfire missiles.

The ABC reports at least 44 people died in bombings in Baghdad on Christmas Day.

The United Nations estimates that more than 8000 people have been killed in attacks in Iraq this year.
