Security officials said General Mohamed Saeed was leaving his home in west Cairo when gunmen on a motorbike opened fire at him, hitting him in the head and the chest. He died in hospital.

On Monday, the Army backed Field Marshall Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the ousting of president Mohamed Morsi last year, to run for the presidency.

The killing also coincided with the start of a second trial against Mr Morsi, who is charged with organising a mass prison break during the 2011 uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak.

General Saeed was the head of the "technical department" of interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim.

Mr Ibrahim himself was targeted by a car bomb on 5 September in Cairo. He had escaped unhurt.
