Strong quake jolts Kermadec Islands

10:35 pm on 9 December 2008

An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale has been recorded near the Kermadec Islands, northeast of New Zealand.

The quake hit at 6.24pm local time and was located 225km southeast of Raoul Island, the largest of the Kermadec group, at a depth of 35km.

A GNS Science spokesperson says there have been no reports of injury or damage on Raoul Island, where Department of Conservation workers and volunteers are based.

The spokesperson says it is likely that the quake is too far away from the Kermadecs to have had any major effect, although workers there would have felt it.
