A funeral ceremony has been held in South Korea for the sailors killed when their warship was cut in half by an explosion close to the sea border with communist North Korea.

Forty-six sailors died in the as-yet-unexplained incident.

The BBC reports more than 500,000 people paid their respects to the dead at altars set up throughout South Korea.

Sirens sounded across the country for the mass funeral, amid calls for justice and pledges to bring those responsible to account.
