Pacific whale spotted in Mediterranean

A huge grey whale has appeared in Mediterranean waters - the first time the giant mammal has been seen outside the Pacific Ocean for hundreds of years.

The 12-metre mature whale has been seen off the Israeli coast near Tel Aviv, the ABC reports.

Scientists say the whale appears to have reached the Atlantic through waters normally covered with ice and its appearance underlines the impact of climate change.

A population of grey whales once lived in the northern Atlantic but they became extinct in the 18th century.
