The United Nations refugee agency now says at least 400,000 people have fled or been displaced by ethnic violence in southern Kyrgyzstan.

Fighting broke out between Kyrgyz and Uzbek communities last week. The BBC reports at least 190 people have been killed since 10 June.

In the city of Osh, Uzbek residents have built barricades separating them from Kyrgyz parts of the city.

The army has set up checkpoints and armed men are patrolling the streets.
