Another boat carrying asylum seekers has been intercepted east of Christmas Island.

Initial indications suggest there are 96 passengers and 3 crew on board.

The ABC reports the group will be transferred to a detention centre on Christmas Island where they will undergo identity, security and health checks.

Another boat carrying 53 people was stopped by the Navy on Wednesday and two others on 18 June. They were carrying 74 people.

Four other boats were intercepted on 4 and 5 June.

The Opposition said at the time that that Navy personnel feel they are no more than a taxi service, with constant trips from Ashmore Reef to Christmas Island.
