Sixty whales have been spotted off the south coast of New South Wales in an annual whale census.

The northerly migration has begun for the southern right and humpback whales.

The end of June is traditionally the busiest time.

The ABC reports volunteers gathered at a lighthouse bordering Jervois Bay on Sunday to count the whales.
