Black Saturday fire accused to stand trial

9:01 pm on 5 July 2010

A former fire volunteer is to stand trial accused of lighting a fire in Gippsland, Victoria, that killed 11 people on what became known as Black Saturday.

On that day last year extreme bushfires killed 173 people and injured more than 400.

Brendan Sokaluk, 40, is charged with 190 offences, including 10 counts of arson causing death.

A court has heard that several witnesses saw Mr Sokaluk at the site of a fire that went on to kill 11 people and destroy 156 homes, the ABC reports.

Magistrate Simon Garnett told the court that there was overwhelming evidence to suggest the fire was deliberately lit. Descriptions of the accused at a committal hearing ranged from a "cunning man" to a "halfwit".

Mr Sokaluk, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, will now be tried in the Supreme Court.
