Thousands more evacuated as floodwaters head south

Flood waters that have inundated northern Pakistan are threatening new areas in the south, forcing the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.

The vast body of flood water which has swept the length of Pakistan is threatening fresh communities in the province of Sindh at the country's southern tip, the BBC reports.

Officials in the district of Tata have been organising the hasty evacuation of about half a million people in a town and many surrounding villages.

At present, all that stands between their homes and the great weight of water is a dam which is now starting to crack.

The progress of the water is hard to predict, but the threat is considered serious and an emergency has been declared.

The flooding in Sindh is adding to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Pakistan. The government says as many as 20 million people have been affected.

Five million are now without any shelter and urgently need tents or plastic sheeting to protect them from the hot sun.

The BBC reports the inadequate supply of food and clean drinking water is adding to fears that a public health disaster may soon follow.
