New surrender call issued in Sri Lanka

8:13 am on 6 February 2009

The government in Sri Lanka has renewed a call for Tamil Tiger rebels to surrender unconditionally or face destruction.

Fighting continues in the north east of the country where forces of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are trapped.

Aid agencies say thousands of civilians are also being held there by the Tigers.

The government has said it will allow safe passage, but has ruled out any ceasefire.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake told parliament there had been reports some Tiger fighters were planning to surrender.

There has been civil war on the island since 1983.
