A survey in Australia has found that schools rely on fundraising and voluntary contributions to pay for basic equipment.
The Australian Education Union surveyed more than 11,000 teachers and principals, as part of a campaign to boost investment in public schools.
The ABC reports that two-thirds said fundraising was "very important" to their school budget, with the majority of money going towards classroom and sporting equipment, software and textbooks.
Union president Angelo Gavrielatos says the survey found 10% of money raised was going towards teacher salaries and support staff.
