Australia's most celebrated opera singer, Dame Joan Sutherland, has been remembered at a state memorial service in Sydney.

Thousands of people packed into the Sydney Opera House to honour La Stupenda, or the stunning one, as she was known.

Dame Joan died at her home near Geneva last month, aged 83, and was buried at a private ceremony in Switzerland.

The service opened with an orchestral piece from the Australian Opera and Ballet orchestra.

A 1976 video recording of Dame Joan singing the Bell Song from the Delibes opera Lakme followed.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard praised Dame Joan as the "greatest singer of the 20th century", and said there was no better place to remember her than at the Opera House.
