Tsvangirai warns against farm invasions

10:49 am on 28 March 2009

Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says anyone invading farms will be arrested, an announcement interpreted as an apparent challenge to President Robert Mugabe.

The veteran opposition leader, who joined Mr Mugabe in a power-sharing government last month, says most of the farm invasions are acts of theft and will not go unpunished.

Mr Mugabe has said the government would continue to seize white-owned farms as part of his land reform policy. The land has been mostly given to landless black Zimbabweans

The seizure of white-owned land is one of Mr Mugabe's defining policies, and the warning is an apparent challenge to Mr Mugabe, whose land policy has been blamed for contributing to the country's economic collapse.
