North Korea criticises South's exercises

9:33 pm on 23 December 2010

North Korea has criticised huge land and sea military exercises staged by the South, but has stopped short of threatening a retaliatory strike.

In a show of military might, South Korea held a land drill in the Pocheon region, between Seoul and the heavily armed demilitarised zone separating the two Koreas.

It also continued naval live-fire exercises 100 kilometres south of the maritime border with North Korea.

The exercises, which were actually scheduled before the current tensions with North Korea, are bringing some criticism that the South is just making the situation worse.
