More rain is forecast for the flood-hit Queensland city of Rockhampton, which is expected to exacerbate flooding and hamper clean-up efforts in the city.
Some 200 millimetres of rain is expected over the weekend.
River levels have been subsiding and emergency services have revised the number of houses inundated in the city from 400 to 150, the ABC reports.
The Fitzroy River peaked at 9.2 metres on Wednesday - 20 centimetres lower than predicted - although the city is expected to be surrounded by floodwaters for up to a week.
Major-General Mick Slater, the head of Queensland's flood recovery taskforce, was to take a first-hand look at the ongoing crisis in the city today and discuss recovery efforts with local authorities.
Further south, residents of Condamine have started returning to the town, spending Thursday night in a nearby mining camp as the town is made safe.
There has also been relief for residents of the southern inland town of St George. The flood threat in the town has been downgraded, but water was still expected to inundate about 30 homes.
