Sherlock Holmes is to be brought back to life in the first novel about the Baker Street detective to be approved by the author's estate.
Anthony Horowitz, author of the Foyle's War television series and stories about teenage spy Alex Rider, has been chosen by Arthur Conan Doyle's estate to write a full-length novel to be published by Orion in September.
Conan Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring the Victorian detective. The last novel was published in 1915.
No details of the new tale or its title have been revealed.
Holmes and his assistant Dr Watson have appeared in a legion of films and plays, but this is the first time the estate has given official approval for a story.
Conan Doyle died in 1930.
