Wounded Congresswoman moved to Texas

12:13 pm on 22 January 2011

An Arizona politician who was shot in the head in an attack at a constituency meeting in which six people died, has been moved to a rehabilitation centre in Texas.

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, 40, was flown from a hospital in Tucson to Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston on Friday afternoon.

She was accompanied on the 1440km flight by her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, her mother and a surgeon.

Doctors said the transfer had gone "flawlessly".

Captain Kelly says he hopes his wife will make a full recovery.

Ms Giffords has undergone a series of operations. But doctors in Arizona say she still has a long road to recovery.

Meanwhile more charges have been brought against the accused gunman.

Jared Loughner, 22, is in custody in Phoenix pending trial for the attack on 8 January in Tucson, in which six were killed and 13 wounded.

He was also indicted this week on three charges of attempting to kill federal officials. He is already charged with the murder of a federal judge.
