World War II bomb evacuation in Paris

10:43 am on 7 February 2011

Police in Paris evacuated 6500 people on Sunday in order to defuse a World War II bomb recently found on a suburban construction site.

The unexploded British bomb was discovered on 27 January during works on the site of a Renault car factory. It weighed 500kg.

Residents in the vicinity were evacuated as a safety precaution, even though the bomb was not considered dangerous.

They were able to return to their homes shortly after midday.

The factory was used to make vehicles for German occupation forces, which made the plant a target for Allied bombers over France.
