British driver Dan Wheldon won the Indianapolis 500 motor race in Indianapolis on Sunday after the leading car crashed within sight of the finish line.

Rookie J R Hildebrand (US) appeared to be headed for certain victory until he slid into the wall coming into the home stretch, allowing Wheldon to take the chequered flag for the second time.

Hildebrand skidded across the line on three wheels to finish second.

It was only the second time since the event began in 1911 that a driver surrendered the lead on the last lap.

It was also the only time during the race that Wheldon was in front.

Graham Rahal (US) was third.

Scott Dixon (New Zealand), who started second and led for much of the race, was fifth. Team mate Dario Franchitti (UK) was 12th.

Wheldon previously won the event in 2005 and was runner-up for the past two years.
