Britain and France call for UN action on Syria

8:34 am on 9 June 2011

Britain and France are intensifying efforts for a United Nations Security Council vote condemning the Syrian government's suppression of months of unrest.

France's Foreign Minister Alain Juppe says it is "inconceivable the security council should remain silent" in the face of worsening violence.

The BBC reports Britain plans to present a draft resolution which condemns the violence and demands that it stop immediately.

Unlike the case of Libya, it does not authorise military measures to protect civilians, or even impose sanctions.

But council members such as Brazil, South Africa and India are afraid it could be the first step towards a Libya-style intervention and are very unhappy with Nato's bombing campaign, saying it has gone too far.

Britain and France have revised the texts to take in their concerns, diplomats say.

The idea is to build enough support in the security council so it would be politically difficult for Russia and China to veto the resolution, the BBC reports.
