Ranchers sell herds as Texas drought worsens

1:25 pm on 18 June 2011

Cattle ranchers in Texas are selling their herds and some communities are running out of water, as a punishing drought in the state shows no sign of waning.

With the driest months still ahead, the Department of Agriculture has categorised more than half the state as in "extreme" or "exceptional" drought conditions.

The department says Texas had its driest March-to-May period since records began in the 1980s.

Farmers say consumers will face higher beef prices in two to three years' time.

City and rural water is being drastically limited, with some rivers and streams expected to cease flowing.
