An Afghan plane flying to the western Xinjiang region of China returned to land in Afghanistan on Sunday after receiving a bomb threat.

China's state news agency, Xinhua, reports the airport in the Xinjiang provincial capital, Urumqi, was ordered by aviation authorities to prevent the plane landing there.

Earlier, it was reported that the incident was a hijacking, but it is now not clear whether the plane was hijacked or how the bomb threat was made.
