Potato genome decoded

1:55 pm on 10 July 2011

International scientists based in Scotland have for the first time decoded the full DNA sequence of the potato, one of the world's most important staple crops.

The researchers say the breakthrough could help increase food production for a growing population.

By locating the genes that control traits like yield, nutritional value and resistance to disease, the research should make it possible to develop new varieties of potato more quickly.
