Serbia arrests war crimes suspect

3:26 pm on 21 July 2011

Serbia has arrested the last fugitive indicted for war crimes during the breakup of the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Goran Hadzic, who was the leader of the ethnic Serbs in the east of Croatia, is wanted by the United Nations war crimes court at The Hague over his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity.

The 52-year-old was a key figure in the breakaway Krajina Serb republic.

After the arrest of the former Bosnian Serb military commander, General Ratko Mladic, less than two months ago, Mr Hadzic was Serbia's last remaining figure sought by the war crimes tribunal.

The BBC reports Mr Hadzic is charged with the murder of hundreds of Croatians and non-Serb during the 1991-1995 war in Croatia.

He went into hiding seven years ago, shortly after the sealed indictment against him was delivered to the government in Belgrade.

Capturing fugitives wanted by a UN war crimes tribunal has been a major pre-condition set by the European Union for Serbia, which applied to join the bloc in 2009.

The EU's top officials say in a statement that the latest arrest is an important step towards Serbia fulfilling its EU ambitions as well as being crucial for international justice
