New protest at Christmas Island detention centre

3:28 pm on 22 July 2011

Protests at the Christmas Island detention centre continued for a third consecutive night on Thursday.

The ABC reports a group of men have barricaded themselves in one of the compounds.

The Department of Immigration says one or two small fires were lit in the northwest compound of the detention centre.

Opposition immigration spokesperson Scott Morrison says the disturbances have become far too common.

Meanwhile, two asylum seeker boats carrying more than 110 people have been detected near Christmas Island.

The ABC reports the latest boat has 62 people on board, while the earlier one was carrying 52.

They will be taken to Christmas Island for processing.

Last year, 134 boats brought 6,535 people, according to the Department of Immigration.

The BBC reports about 4,000 people are currently in immigration detention in Australia, including children.

Christmas Island is about 2,400km from the Australian mainland.

Swap deal close

A refugee swap deal between Australia and Malaysia is set to be finalised early next week.

The ABC understands Immigration Minister Chris Bowen and Home Affairs Minister Hishammuddin Hussein of Malaysia will meet to sign documents formalising the asylum seeker swap deal in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Under the agreement, 800 asylum seekers will be transferred to Malaysia. In exchange, Australia will take 4,000 genuine refugees over four years.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott says the deal is a bad one, and won't stop the boats.
