Ceasefire announced in Sudan region

9:16 am on 24 August 2011

After weeks of fighting between government troops and rebels, President Omar Hassan al-Bashir of Sudan has announced a two-week unilateral ceasefire in South Kordofan.

Fighting since June has displaced some 70,000 people. Khartoum denies accusations of ethnic cleansing there.

The BBC reports many people in South Kordofan, especially residents of the Nuba mountains, fought with southern rebels during a north-south war which lasted two decades, but now find themselves in the north.
