Bid by PM to end anti-corruption protests

12:16 pm on 24 August 2011

The Indian government has stepped up efforts to end national anti-corruption protests led by an ailing activist.

Anna Hazare, 74, is in a second week of fasting and there are growing concerns over his health.

However, meetings between his aides and government ministers to try to end an impasse over implementing tougher anti-graft laws have ended without a breakthrough.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has written a personal letter to Mr Hazare asking him to end the hunger strike.

He remains lying or sitting on a public stage on open ground in the capital New Delhi for much of the day, surrounded by at least 10,000 supporters.

Open toilets and spilling waste are starting to cause outbreaks of food poisoning and illness amid the monsoon heat.
