Israelis hold huge rallies over living costs

2:52 pm on 4 September 2011

Thousands of Israelis have again taken to the streets in mass protests over the high cost of living.

The main demonstrations were in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa and police say that at least 300,000 people took part in the protests overall.

The protests are the latest in a series held throughout the summer, the BBC reports.

Many Israelis are angry at the high cost of housing, food, education and health care.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government has responded by forming a committee to examine calls for economic reform.
