At least nine people have been killed and more than 200 injured in a massive rush-hour rail collision in Argentina.

The crash occurred at 7am at as thousands of commuters were pouring into the Flores station, in southwestern Buenos Aires.

Reports suggest the train slammed into a bus and the impact propelled the train's front carriage in front of another locomotive on adjacent tracks, the ABC reports.

Authorities are investigating reports that the bus driver failed to heed a train crossing signal.

Officials as many as 30 of the injured were very badly hurt, suggesting the death toll could climb substantially.

Argentina's transportation secretary, Juan Pablo Schiavi, said most of the fatalities were among people who had been aboard the bus, including the driver.
