Fifteen Ethiopian athletes have gone missing while taking part in the All Africa Games in Mozambique.

They went missing from the Games village in Maputo after competing in boxing, athletics and taekwondo events, but left some of their possessions there.

Athletics coach Yonas Gebremariam said they had been due to return home directly after the competition.

More than 5200 athletes are taking part in the four-yearly All Africa event in Mozambique. Ethiopian competitors had won 17 medals - including three gold - by Thursday.

The BBC reports Mozambique is a popular transit route for illegal immigrants from Ethiopia, Somalia and central Africa.
