British police have arrested seven people on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack.

Six men, aged between 25 and 32, were arrested in raids at a number of properties in Birmingham and a 22-year-old woman was held on suspicion of withholidng inforamtion.

The ABC reports the investigation relates to Islamist extremism, though commentators say the fact that arresting officers were unarmed suggests there was no imminent threat.

West Midlands Police Assistant Chief Constable for security Marcus Beale said the arrests were the result of a large-scale operation that had been running for some time.

Police were continuing to search 14 properties and were removing computer equipment.
