A state funeral for the chairman of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, Burhanuddin Rabbani, has taken place in Kabul amid tight security.

President Hamid Karzai led thousands of mourners at the funeral of the former Afghanistan president, who was assassinated by a suicide bomber on Tuesday.

Police and troops blocked roads near the burial site on Friday. Mourners were searched as they made their way there.

The ABC reports there was a mixture of weeping and anger in the crowds.

Professor Rabbani, 71, was president during the civil war in 1992-96 and chairman of the High Peace Council.

He was killed at his home by a turban bomber purporting to be a peace emissary from the Taliban.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan on Thursday flew to Kabul to pay his respects, but did not stay for the funeral.
