ICC seeks surrender of Gaddafi's son

10:00 pm on 29 October 2011

The International Criminal Court says it is in informal contact with Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saif al-Islam, regarding his surrender.

ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo says his office has made it clear that if the son of the ousted dictator surrenders to it, he has the right to be heard in court and is innocent until proven guilty.

Under such a deal, Saif al-Islam would be taken to The Hague. The ICC has no police force of its own and relies on state cooperation to have suspects arrested.

The court gave no details on the younger Gaddafi's whereabouts but says it is galvanising efforts to arrest him and former intelligence chief, Abdullah al-Senussi.

It's believed both men are being sheltered by Tuareg nomads in the Sahara, in the borderlands of Libya and Niger.

Mr Moreon-Ocampo says Saif al-Islam has denied charges of crimes against humanity during Libya's civil war.
