Costa Concordia search called off

1:13 pm on 1 February 2012

Officials in Italy have called off the underwater search for bodies around the Costa Concordia cruise ship that capsized on 13 January.

At least seventeen people are confirmed dead. AFP reports 18 people are still officially missing.

The BBC reports work to recover the capsized vessel may take up to 10 months.

The Civil Protection Agency said emergency crews would continue to inspect the part of the ship that is above the water line and use specialist equipment to check whether there could be any corpses on the sea bed.

The fire service said instruments monitoring the ship's movements showed that it was no longer safe for divers. However, work would continue in dry areas of the ship.
