Atheist wins lawsuit against council prayers

An atheist in Britain who objected to his town council holding religious prayers as part of its meetings has won a lawsuit against the practice.

Councillor Clive Bone said the prayers embarrassed and disadvantaged him, the BBC reports.

The High Court in London agreed, ruling that Bideford Council in Devon had exceeded its powers by making prayers part of the formal business of meetings.

A spokesperson for the Christian Institute pressure group, Simon Culvert, says the ruling is on the wrong side of British public opinion.
