News Corp to launch Sunday edition of The Sun

6:06 am on 18 February 2012

News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch has declared his unwavering support for journalists at the The Sun in London by announcing a Sunday edition of the paper will be launched.

"We will build on The Sun's proud heritage by launching the Sun on Sunday very soon," Mr Murdoch said in a company email.

Ten current and former senior reporters and executives at The Sun have been arrested since November over payments to public officials.

Mr Murdoch also announced he was lifting the suspensions of all arrested personnel at the paper, saying they were welcome to return to work.

The ABC reports The Sun on Sunday will be aimed to fill the gap in the Sunday newspaper market left by the News of the World, which sold 2.7 million copies every week.

News Corp closed the News of the World last July after it was engulfed in a phone hacking scandal.

The Sun sells 2.5 million copies each day.
