Clarinetist Jonathan Cohen and his friends from the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra play two beautiful clarinet quintets from the Classical and Romantic eras. The first by Mozart, the second by Brahms.

This concert was held at St. Peter's Church in Takapuna and was part of the APO's In Your Neighbourhood concert series. Those concerts give the orchestra members a chance to play chamber music and it's a great opportunity to have concerts in different parts of the city, other than at the Town Hall.

Jonathan is joined by a string quartet made up of fellow APO players: Associate concert master Liu-Yi Retallick, violinist Lauren Bennett, principal viola Robert Ashworth, and cellist David Garner.

Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART: Clarinet Quintet

Originally written for the basset clarinet, nowadays it's played on a clarinet in A. Mozart wrote it in 1789 for clarinetist Anton Stadler. The clarinet was developed in the time of Mozart, which means that this piece is one of the first to be written for the clarinet and string quartet.

Johannes BRAHMS: Clarinet Quintet

Brahms wrote his Clarinet Quintet in 1891, over one hundred years after Mozart. But in all that time not many pieces were written for clarinet and string quartet. Clarinetists don't have that many choices for curating concerts. But luckily the Brahms Clarinet Quintet is a fabulous piece of music.
