Fiji regime says it will talk with Commonwealth in second week of September

Fiji's military led government says it intends holding talks with representatives from the Commonwealth in the second week of September.

This comes after the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group announced a month ago that Fiji had to commit to holding elections by October next year before the end of August, or it would face expulsion from the 53 nation body.

Attempts to set up talks during August have so far failed but Fiji's interim leader, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has told Auckland based Radio Tarana that the talks are scheduled for the week after the ninth of September.

"We have talked about some dates and I think the weekend after the ninth of September that will be when they are coming to Fiji."

The Commonwealth Secretary General, Kamalesh Sharma, said earlier the body wants the proposed President's political dialogue forum revived to ensure there is a discussion involving people across a broad social spectrum about the country's future direction.

The two main political parties in Fiji, the SDL and Labour, have this week made a similar call.
