Opposition antics prompt Nauru woman to enter politics

A woman standing in the Nauru elections this weekend says she was prompted to enter the race by the opposition's antics.

Greta Harris is one of eight women standing for the 18 seats in a snap election called last month.

The opposition had called a series of unsuccessful motions of no confidence lately and Ms Harris says the grounds for such actions were wasteful and counterproductive to parliamentary progress.

She says this was not a good development for Nauru.

"I am not happy with this because I think we are going against progress. And we are slowly progressing. We have come out of the depths and this is really opposite what we are trying to achieve."

Greta Harris says there are 22 candidates standing in her four-member constituency.
