China offers tai chi lessons to Fiji regime

Fiji officials say China is sending a martial arts expert to Fiji to teach interim cabinet ministers the slow-motion techniques of tai chi.

The interim Education Minister, Filipe Bole, says China agreed to send the tai chi master when China's Sports Minister Liu Peng visited Fiji earlier this year.

Mr Bole says the expert will spend three months teaching tai chi to cabinet ministers, public servants, police, military and the general public.

The move is seen as a sign of closer ties between Fiji and China in the face of condemnation from traditional allies Australia and New Zealand of the 2006 military coup.

Fiji has also said that it will open diplomatic missions in Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil amid a shift in diplomatic focus.
