Pacific Art in NZ's South Auckland to be celebrated in an arts summit

11:03 am on 25 May 2011

The Auckland Council is supporting the vibrancy of Pacific Art in South Auckland, New Zealand by putting on an Arts Summit.

Pacific themed exhibitions, heritage arts, workshops, theatre, language and literature activities are on offer for locals for free or at a minimal cost.

The council's Pacific Arts Coordinator for Arts and Culture South, Ema Tavola, says the aim is to encourage local support for the variety of talented art on offer.

"Just given our demographics of the area, being predominantly a Polynesian community, and so we've programmed a month long festival of thought. It has a strong visual arts component, being that it's based around an exhibitions gallery, but its that time of year when we try and diversify what Pacific art looks and feels like in South Auckland."

Ema Tavola says events are at venues across South Auckland until June 4.
