A possible watershed for moment for West Papuan independence

From , 4:03 pm on 29 September 2017

A petition to the United Nations with the signatures of 1.8 million West Papuans seeking self-determination could be a watershed moment for the independence movement.

The petitioners say the document represents the will of over 70 percent of the indigenous population in Indonesia's Papua region, known as West Papua.

It seeks West Papua's reinscription to the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation, and a UN sponsored referendum on independence.
