El Nino to bring rainfall for drought-stricken parts of Pacific

From , 6:02 am on 1 July 2023
El Nino is the warm phase of the El Nino/La Nina Southern Oscillation (ENSO) that occurs across the tropical Pacific Ocean roughly every five years. The ENSO affects weather systems across the world, bringing extreme weather such as floods and droughts. El Nino generally causes drier conditions in Australia and South-East Asia, and wetter and warmer conditions in the Americas.

The Pacific is about to get a dramatic shift in weather over the next 12 months as it moves from a triple dip La Nina to El Nino.

La Niña is the cooling phase whereas El Niño is the warming phase of the waters in the eastern Pacific, off the coast of South America.

It is one of the most significant climate drivers for the region.
