175 nations have agreed to develop a legally binding agreement on plastic pollution by 2024, prompting a major step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions from plastic production, use and disposal.

Held in Ottowa, Canada, from April 23-29, the last major round of negotiations will bring together the treaty's Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to draft a global, legally binding agreement by the end of 2024, according to the U.N.

RNZ Pacific's Eleisha Foon spoke with Project Scientist at the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory, Neil Nathan who has been on the sidelines of the negotiations in Ottowa.
