Simon Morris welcomes several new women-driven movies, and wishes the directors would hurry up with their next projects.   This week, films from New Zealand’s Michelle Savill and the hard-working Lena Dunham, and the latest take on the well-worn story of Marilyn Monroe.

 

 

Blonde is a “fictional biography” of Marilyn Monroe, with an uncompromising take on the usual tragic tale of the American Dream.   Directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper) and starring Cuban-born Ana de Armas (Knives out) as the Blonde.  Out on Netflix.

 

Millie lies low is Kiwi Michelle Savill’s debut feature – a comedy-drama about a young woman who panics just before leaving for her dream job in New York.  Can she fool her friends she’s in the Big Apple?   Starring Ana Scotney (Cousins).

 

 

And Catherine called Birdy is a medieval coming of age film about a 13th century girl with a 21st century attitude.  Stars Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones), with Andrew Scott (Fleabag) and Billie Piper (Doctor Who).  Directed by Lena Dunham (Girls) for Amazon Prime.
