Simon Morris tries, and fails, to get excited about the upcoming Oscars.   And he’s equally underwhelmed by three slightly disappointing releases this week, including one Oscar Best Film nominee.

 

Triangle of sadness did well at Cannes last year, and is up for three Oscars this year.   But does this satire of the idle rich pack much of a punch?   Written and directed by Sweden’s Ruben Östlund (The Square), it features Woody Harrelson as a luxury yacht captain.

 

 

Creed 3 continues the extended life of the Rocky franchise, though without Sylvester Stallone this time.   Directed by star Michael B Jordan, it co-stars rising star Jonathan Majors.

 

 

 

 

 

And Sir Sam Mendes’ nostalgic Empire of light remembers the picture palaces of 1980s Britain.   Stars Olivia Colman, Colin Firth and newcomer Micheal Ward.
