AT THE MOVIES #914    WHO DOESN’T KNOW THIS STORY?

Simon Morris looks at three movies based on very well-known stories in their home territory.  And he fails to be impressed with the latest iteration of an old comic-book hero (created about the same time as Superman).

Shazam: Fury of the Gods sees Billy Batson grow older but not much wiser.   Featuring, as the Daughters of Atlas, Rachel Zegler (West Side story), Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels) and Dame Helen Mirren (The Queen)

Corsage is an Austrian film about one of the most famous royals of the Nineteenth Century, the Empress Elisabeth of Austro-Hungary, better known as “Sissi”.  Stars Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread).

Argentina 1985 is the Golden Globe winning account of how the notorious dictators of Argentina were brought to trial.   Starring Ricardo Darín (The Secret in their eyes), it was also nominated for a Bafta and an Oscar.

And Boston Strangler shows that there’s far more to the famous serial killer than made it into the 1968 movie starring Tony Curtis.   Featuring Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon as the two journalists who broke the story.
