A seismologist explains 'earthquake lights'

A strange blue light lit up the sky above Japan today at the same as the 7.1 aftershock struck the north-east coast. The flash is clearly visible in footage taken during the quake and there's a lot of talk now about the phenomenon of 'earthquake lights'.
